How to Create Lighting Effects in Photoshop

Today I’m going to show you how to create lighting effects in Photoshop. Hey there and welcome to Phlearn! My name is Aaron NACE and you can find me on where we make learning fun. In today’s episode, we’re going to show you how to create lighting effects for images. This is super cool because we’re going to take the existing lights, make them warm or a little bit cooler, and also give them a little bit of a glow to make them more present in the image. Let’s get started!

Isolating Light Sources

The first thing we need to do is isolate some of the light sources in the image. The easiest way to do this is through the Channels dialog. Click on Channels, and if you don’t see it, go to Window and down to Channels to make sure it’s selected. Look for the channel with the greatest contrast between the light sources and the background. Once you’ve selected the appropriate channel, turn it into a selection by clicking on the thumbnail. Now, load it into a layer mask to control the visibility of the new layer.

Creating a Color Fill Layer

Next, create a new layer and use the solid color fill option. Because you created a solid color fill layer and had a selection, it will automatically load that selection into the layer mask. Choose a warm color to add warmth to the light sources. Further refine the layer mask by adjusting levels to control the layer’s visibility in the image.

Blending Modes

Change the blending mode of the layer to something like Overlay or Screen to enhance the lighting effects. Adjust the color of the solid color fill layer to change the colors of the lights in the image. Duplicate the layer to create a stronger effect and experiment with blending modes to achieve the desired look.

Adding a Glow Effect

To add a cinematic presence and a glow to the lights, duplicate one of the layers and change the blending mode to create a haze effect in the image. Adjust the color of the duplicated layer to enhance the glow and create a more dynamic lighting effect.

By following these steps, you can create stunning lighting effects in Photoshop to enhance your images and make them more visually appealing. Experiment with different blending modes and colors to achieve the perfect lighting for your photos. Have fun creating beautiful lighting effects in Photoshop!
