How I Shoot Drone Photos (Vertical Shooting Hack)

The Setup

Today is a perfect day to get this shot on the Gold Coast. The skyline runs along the coast and when the sun sets, it casts a beautiful shadow that runs along the beach and out into the water. The weather is calm and sunny, so it’s time to grab the drone and set it up.

The Shooting Process

When shooting with a DJI drone, you’re limited to landscape orientation for photos. However, for Instagram, the ideal format is a 4×5 portrait orientation. To achieve this, I have a hack that involves shooting multiple photos and stitching them together in post-processing.

Instead of cropping a single landscape photo, I pan the camera up slightly to capture the top of the scene and then down to capture the bottom. This way, I have multiple variations of each shot with different framing.

The Post-Processing

Back at the computer, I import the photos into Lightroom and select the pairs of images that I want to stitch together. Using the Panorama Merge feature in Lightroom, I combine the photos to create a seamless portrait orientation image.

After merging the photos, I crop the image to a 4×5 aspect ratio for Instagram. I ensure that key elements, like the Q1 building, are centered and straight in the frame. Then, I use the Upright tool to correct any perspective issues and straighten out the buildings.

Finally, I apply my preset for color grading and make adjustments to exposure and white balance to enhance the image further. The result is a stunning drone photo in portrait orientation that is perfect for sharing on Instagram.

By utilizing this vertical shooting hack, I can capture unique drone photos in portrait orientation that stand out on social media. With a combination of shooting techniques and post-processing skills, I can achieve the desired look and showcase the beauty of the Gold Coast skyline in a creative way.
