Hello everybody and welcome to what is a very exciting video for me because today is my 30th birthday and for the first time in my life, I feel like a proper adult. A real adult. I still don’t dress like one, granted, but baby steps. Also, pretty much all of my birthday plans have been scuppered by the fact that the weather is not great. I planned to play golf all day today, badly, but I’m very much a fair-weather golfer so that’s gone out the window. Instead, what I’ve decided to spend my day doing is editing some of the Greenland photos I took a week or two ago. And while I was doing that, I came across one image which I think is really, really good at demonstrating what I think is one of the most underused tools, probably the most underused tool, in Lightroom.
The Image and Its Editing
This image is sponsored by Lumix and was taken with the Lumix G9 and the 12-35 lens, which I think is the best camera lens travel photography combination that I’ve ever used. These two pieces of kit together are probably responsible for 50-60% of my photos in the last year or so. Now, I’ve done some basic editing to this image – increased the exposure a little bit, upped the shadows, upped the whites, lowered the blacks, increased clarity and vibrance, added a shallow S-curve, and decreased the luminance of the blues. Outside of that, it’s pretty much ready to go, apart from a few adjustments I’d like to make.
Selective Darkening of the Sky
What I’d like to do is darken the sky a little bit and bring out the birds in the image. This image is all about the birds, and I would have framed it differently if they weren’t there. Previously, I would have had to go into Photoshop to selectively darken the sky without affecting the birds. Lightroom has not been particularly good at making selective changes historically, but with the range mask tool, I no longer need to jump into Photoshop for this.
Using the graduated filter in Lightroom, I can darken the sky without affecting the birds. By adjusting the range mask, either in terms of luminance or color, I can make selective adjustments to different parts of the image. This tool has greatly reduced my reliance on Photoshop for selective adjustments, making my editing process more efficient.

The range mask tool in Lightroom has saved me countless hours. I no longer have to go into Photoshop to make accurate selections. The auto mask tool in Lightroom is often useful, but it fails at times. With the range mask tool, I can make precise and selective adjustments without leaving Lightroom.
