Fuji X-T2 Review for Filmmakers – 4K Video and Low Light Test Footage
Alright guys, so about four weeks ago, I picked up the Fujifilm XT-2 for the purpose of shooting 4K video. And also because I’m really into shooting stills, and the reviews about this camera’s stills are amazing. I’ve been using it for about three or four weeks now, and I have to say, I really enjoy shooting 4K with this camera. In fact, I liked it so much that I went out and bought two. The camera that’s recording me right now is the XT-2 as well. So, I thought I’d do a little bit of a review on this camera, go through all the things that I liked about it, the things that I don’t like about it, and what could be improved. I’ll also explain why I chose this camera. Let’s get into it.
4K Video Recording
The XT-2 can record 4K up to 30P and 1080p up to 60P. For 4K, it captures the full 5K resolution of the sensor and downscales it to a 4K image. For 1080p, it records a 3K image and downconverts it to 1080p. Additionally, the XT-2 has a 100 megabit codec across all formats.
One thing to note about the 4K on the XT-2 is that it does have an additional crop, making the total crop on a full frame about 1.75x. This should be taken into account when selecting lenses for the XT-2.
Battery Grip
If you choose to pick up an XT-2, I highly recommend getting the battery grip. It allows you to store an extra two batteries inside the camera, giving it more weight and a solid feeling when hand-holding. It also extends the recording time limit from 10 minutes internally to 30 minutes. This is particularly useful for events like weddings or interviews, where longer recording times are needed. The grip also adds a headphone jack on the side. One of the coolest things about this battery grip is that you can detach it from the camera, plug in the power socket, and then charge the batteries inside the grip. This makes it convenient to charge all three batteries overnight and be ready to shoot the next day.
Color Reproduction
One of the main reasons I bought the XT-2 is its color reproduction. Apart from Canon cameras and higher-end cameras like RED and Arri Alexa, the XT-2 is the first consumer camera that reproduces color beautifully. It not only reproduces color accurately but also in a stylistic and beautiful way. My favorite picture style so far is Classic Chrome, which has a good amount of saturation in the mid-tones while maintaining neutral shadows and highlights. The camera allows you to customize these film presets, so I recommend decreasing the shadow and highlight tone, as well as reducing color and sharpness to achieve a flatter picture style.
Customizable Buttons and Dials
All the buttons and dials on the back of the camera are remappable, allowing you to customize your shooting experience. For example, on my camera, I have the left button on the d-pad set to change the film simulation, the right button to change white balance, and the up button to adjust the mic level. I have also set the front dial to control ISO and the back dial to change the shutter speed. With these settings, I can control all three settings with one hand, which is very convenient.
Portability and Compatibility
The XT-2, along with the Fuji X series lenses, is very compact and lightweight. This makes it easy to carry multiple camera bodies in the same bag that would usually fit only one Canon 1D body. Another advantage is that the camera is compatible with gimbals, making it easy to balance on stabilizers like the Zhiyun Crane.
In conclusion, the Fuji XT-2 is a great camera for filmmakers, especially those looking for excellent 4K video quality and impressive color reproduction. The addition of the battery grip extends the recording time and adds convenience to charging the batteries. With customizable buttons and dials, the XT-2 offers a tailored shooting experience. Its portability and compatibility with gimbals make it a versatile tool for any filmmaker. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase of the XT-2 and would highly recommend it to fellow filmmakers.
