FREE V-LOG L LUTS FOR PANASONIC GH4 and GH5

After months of anticipation, Panasonic has finally released the highly sought-after V-log for their GH4 and GH5 cameras. This update brings an impressive 12 stops of dynamic range, compared to the 10 stops offered by the normal picture profile. The main advantage of V-log is that it provides users with greater control and flexibility.

Converting V-log Footage

When shooting in V-log, it is necessary to use a look-up table (LUT) to convert the footage back to rec.709. It’s worth noting that the VariCam light may boost saturation, which can result in a peculiar reddish tone on skin. To address this, the author decided to create their own V-log to rec.709 converter using DaVinci Resolve.

A test was conducted using this homemade LUT, with special thanks to Ben’s Burgers for providing delicious food and Sam for modeling. On a bright and sunny day, the test showcased the camera’s ability in capturing excellent shadow contrast. It’s important to remember that even with V-log, adjustments can still be made to black and white levels, saturation, and more, further enhancing the footage.

Exposing V-log Properly

When shooting with V-log, it is crucial to overexpose by two stops. Failure to do so may result in excessive noise and discrepancies when applying the lookup table. It is highly recommended to thoroughly test the camera’s performance in different lighting conditions before embarking on important projects like weddings or short films.

Nocturnal Opportunities

During a networking event held in an atmospheric underground bar, the author had the opportunity to capture nighttime footage using V-log. This experience provided a chance to create ten new lookup tables specifically designed for V-log. These tables are now available for free download, along with the author’s custom LUT, allowing users to elevate their V-log shooting experience.

Feedback and insights from fellow V-log users are highly encouraged, especially from those new to shooting with this profile. The author looks forward to hearing about others’ experiences and discoveries. While day shooting and additional tests have been promising, the ultimate challenge will be a wedding shoot scheduled for the next day. Stay tuned for updates. Thank you for watching!

Take it easy.
