First Look at the DJI Ronin-SC Gimbal! (Hands-On Test Footage)

The DJI Ronin-SC is the latest gimbal from DJI, designed for smaller, lighter weight cameras like mirrorless options. In this video, we will provide a brief overview and hands-on test footage of the Ronin-SC. Please note that there may be some bias in this review, as we were able to try out the gimbal ahead of time thanks to CGI, a company we have previously worked with. However, we will provide an unbiased evaluation of its features, pros, and cons.

Comparison to the Ronin-S

Let’s start by comparing the Ronin-SC to its predecessor, the Ronin-S. The SC weighs approximately two and a half pounds, while the S weighs around four pounds. The payload capacity of the S is 7.9 pounds, whereas the SC can handle up to 4.4 pounds. Battery life is also slightly different, with the S offering a twelve-hour battery life compared to the SC’s ten hours. Two notable features that are exclusive to the SC are Active Track 3.0 and Force Mobile, as the S uses an older version of Bluetooth. In terms of price, the Ronin-S starts at $559 USD, while the Ronin-SC starts at $439. The SC Pro Combo, which includes the focus motor, is priced at $539.

Design and Performance

The Ronin-SC retains the familiar design and feel of previous Ronin gimbals, with the key difference being its lighter weight. This makes a significant difference when shooting on the go, as every ounce counts. Despite its smaller size, the SC still allows for most of the same moves and maneuvers as the larger Ronin-S. However, one limitation we noticed is that when using a heavier lens, the back of the camera can hit the gimbal, restricting its range of motion, especially in underslung mode.

The Ronin-SC introduces a few notable changes compared to the Ronin-S. It now includes locking switches for each individual axis, which greatly assists in balancing and carrying the gimbal. Another useful addition is the mount for a phone, which can be used as a secondary monitor or camera control tool if your camera has a compatible app. The adjustable slider on the plate is also a convenient feature, allowing you to mark the spot where your camera is balanced. This makes it easy to remove and reattach the camera without needing to recalibrate.

Active Track 3.0 and Force Mobile

One of the unique features of the Ronin-SC is Active Track 3.0. By mounting your phone to the shoe mount of your camera and using the DJI app, you can track a subject, and the gimbal will automatically adjust its movement accordingly. We tested this feature with a smaller lens, and it worked well, effectively tracking the subject and ensuring smooth footage. The Forest Mobile feature allows you to use your phone’s gyroscope as a control method for the gimbal’s movement. However, this feature has some limitations. Firstly, it only works with iOS devices and requires staying within a range of approximately 10 meters from the gimbal. Additionally, to monitor the video feed wirelessly, you would need a second phone, and the latency of Wi-Fi transmission may still pose some challenges.

Recommended for Lightweight Setups

Overall, if you own a mirrorless or lightweight rig under four and a half pounds, we highly recommend considering the DJI Ronin-SC. It offers solid performance, ease of use, and portability without sacrificing stability. While the new features like Active Track and Force Mobile may be less relevant for heavier setups or those in need of low latency wireless video monitoring, the Ronin-SC still excels as a one-handed gimbal that won’t strain your back or your wallet.
