EPIC NEW CAMERA BAG – PolarPro Boreal 50L Camera Bag/Travel Bag

Introduction

Have you ever thought that camera bags were too small? Like, you’re the kind of person that wants to take all their professional gear in one bag at one time and be able to go up a mountain or into the backcountry, and you also want that same bag to be able to work kind of as a travel bag, including some gear and travel clothing. But you haven’t really found the right bag for you. In theory, the right bag is in this box.

Today we are taking a first look at the PolarPro Boreal 50 liter camera bag. This thing is in pre-production, they sent this to me and they said David, you have three days with it and then you gotta send it back to us and try not to mess it up because we’ve only got a couple of them. So, we’re just going to do kind of a first look in the studio here of this bag and then once I get one that I get to keep, we’ll go into the mountains, we’ll go to Big Bear or something like that and do like a proper hike with this thing. But let’s just see what this bag is all about.

Exterior Features

This is a very big box for a camera bag. Oh, there’s lots of stuff in here. So, I will be using some notes today because again you are seeing this as I’m seeing it, so I have notes about what I’m looking at. The very first thing I’m looking at here is a packing cube. Check this thing out, this is a 10 liter packing cube. We’ll get to that. And this guy here, a larger version of it, a 20 liter packing cube. And then this guy right here, oh I like this already because I love little tech bag things. We’ll get to this. This is the tech bag. But the main event, the thing, oh wow that’s very big. Holy cow, look at that thing. This is the Boreal 50 liter backpack from PolarPro. This thing’s a beast.

Let’s look through the exterior of the bag first and then we’ll get into the inside. But the first thing to note is this thing is 50 liters plus a roll top, and this roll top gives you 10 additional liters on top, making this thing 60 liters. My current backpack that I’m using is 25 liters, so this thing is more than double my normal backpack by 10 liters. I don’t think I’m gonna have an issue with running out of space.

The outside here is a 600d polyester with DWR coating, which stands for durable water repellent. So, this whole thing right here is water resistant but not waterproof. It does have those YKK like really nice water-resistant zippers on there. Oh, and I like the pull tab. Can you see the hang on, can you see the zipper pulls? The zipper pulls are all paracord. Now the joy with paracord zipper pulls is a lot of my bags that I have from companies that make their own zipper pulls, zipper pulls always break and then once you break it, you’ve got to replace it and if you can’t get it through them, you’re just getting like a weird one off Amazon. So then you got all nice zipper pulls and then one little weird one. And I’ve seen other companies do paracord zipper pulls and the nice thing about this is if I was to break one of these or one of them was to come off or something like that for like ten dollars on Amazon, I can get a hundred feet of paracord and make all the zipper pulls I could ever need.

Ok, let’s see how that fits over it. So if you’re in like pouring-down rain or something like that, you’re gonna want to put this duck cover on. But if it’s like light rain or snow, things like that, you are good just with this backpack because again it has that very weather-resistant coating on it. So, things of note on the exterior of the bag, there are two front pockets. It looks like we got one right here, this one right here. This zipper is like a big pocket, like all the way down here, all the way up here, that’s like that whole front panel. And then this guy here, over to there, this is like a lower smaller pocket if you keep like passport-like small goods right there and then a big pocket for other things. And then up top here, we’ve got a little pocket. Oh, it goes down pretty far, it’s like a whole hand deep. And then we got a key ring hook in there. I always think every bag should have a key ring hook, like, there should be a place where I know that’s where my keys live.

All the way up this side, this zipper comes up and oh yeah, look in there. See this is like the soft stuff, this is a laptop pocket. And it says this thing fits a 16-inch MacBook Pro, let’s find out.

Alright, 16-inch MacBook Pro. Oh yeah, there’s like room to spare with a 16-inch MacBook Pro in there. Look at this, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is in there and it’s got like extra room. So, if Apple ever comes out with an 18-inch MacBook Pro, this will also fit that. That is a big pocket and like I said it’s got like that nice material in it for your laptop. Moving around to the sides, we’ve got very large water bottle pockets on the side. It says that they’re for 32-ounce water bottles. Let’s pop that bad boy in there. Oh yeah, plenty of room for a 32-ounce water bottle and that is on both sides. This side has a strap over the water bottle pocket, so I think that they intend this side to be used as a water bottle, but I think this is kind of more like the tripod side. There’s an upper strap right here, so this would be, you know, kind of helping you tie down your tripod. You pop it in there, you’d be able to tighten up this bottom strap and then tighten this strap right there. And then, oh, there’s a third strap, there’s three straps on this side. This is for sure the tripod side.

Lastly, on this bag, on the back here, you’ll see these are like this is like legit backpacking-style straps and kind of the whole air mesh system here with the channel down the middle. It’s got the two channels kind of on either side. That’s just, you know, so you stay less sweaty. It is super padded, this piece right there, that’s like uber padded. Let’s feel what this thing is like. Oh, and the waist belt’s like a legit. Like this is like a legit backpacking waist belt. It’s got pockets on both sides. Right, hang on, the waist strap has pockets and that mole on both sides like the…
