Edit Your Photos Like a Pro in Lightroom

Hey everyone! Today I have a new Lightroom tutorial for you guys and I’m going to take you step-by-step on how I would edit a portrait using the Sony 28278 kit lens. The camera body that I used for this shoot is the Sony a7 3, paired with the kit lens. If you want to see the behind the scenes video of this shoot, you can check it out here. It was a fun shoot and I’m really happy with the images I captured. Many of you were asking for a Lightroom tutorial using a kit lens, so here we are!

Step 1: Sharpening and Detail

Zooming in to the image at 100%, we can see that it is sharp on Karina’s eyes and there’s plenty of detail in the fur. I still want to sharpen it a bit more to bring out the texture in the portrait. I love how sharpening adds definition to eyelashes and eyebrows. Next, I will head into the Tone Curve and add some style to the image. Pulling the black slider up slightly and shadows down adds a matte texture to the shadows while maintaining contrast. I’ll also adjust the mid-tones and highlights in the curve for the desired brightness.

Step 2: Balancing the Tones

Heading into the basic column, I’ll start by balancing out the tones in the image. I’ll adjust the highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks to bring out more detail in Karina’s face. I want to make sure the face and eyes are the focal point of the portrait. Balancing the tones will help enhance the overall look of the image.

Step 3: Fine-Tuning with HSL

Using the Hue, Saturation, and Luminance sliders in HSL, I’ll fine-tune the colors in the image. By adjusting the luminance of specific colors like purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow, I can brighten up certain areas of the image. For skin tones, I’ll focus on red, orange, and yellow sliders. Brightening these colors can make the skin appear more vibrant and well-lit.

Step 4: Enhancing with Split Toning

Finally, the star of today’s tutorial – split toning. By using opposite colors in the highlights and shadows, I can completely transform the mood of the portrait. Split toning adds a unique look to the image and can enhance certain colors and tones. It’s a powerful tool to take your editing to the next level.

By following these steps and using various tools in Lightroom, you can edit your photos like a pro and create stunning portraits. Experiment with different settings and techniques to find your own editing style. Have fun editing and let your creativity shine!
