DJI Action 2 – PROBLEM SOLVED!
Welcome back to another quick review Tuesday. Tuesdays are now going to either be quick tip Tuesdays or quick review Tuesdays. Sometimes there’s just products that don’t need a whole long video; I could kind of sum them up in like three to five minutes. So subscribe for more videos like this. Today, we are talking about the DJI Action 2, and there’s a couple of issues that I have with this camera.
Non-Waterproof Mods
One issue is the non-waterproof mods. Only this bit is waterproof, and this bit is not.
No Removable Lens Cover
But the main thing that really drives me crazy is no removable lens cover. If you use this action camera like an action camera and you scratch this little front piece of glass or you ding it in any way, your camera’s just dead. You’re sending this piece back to DJI, and you gotta wait to get a new one. So if you’re out and you jack up the front lens, which is a total bummer, but I do have a solution for you today if you own the DJI Action 2. You’re going to want to hear this.

No Replaceable Lens Cover
DJI Action 2 – enter magnetic ND filters from Freewell. I got both packs here. This is their standard pack, and this one comes with an ND8, an ND16, and an ND32, as well as a circular polarizer filter. The other one here, this is their bright daylight pack, which is an ND8, ND16, ND32, and ND64. But they all have circular polarizers built in. And like I said, they are magnetic. Whoa! And they look good. They must have worked with DJI pretty closely to get them to look so good. If DJI made filters, this is what they would look like. Like, it looks like it’s DJI branded. It just says Freewell on it. It’s so perfect. It’s like perfectly flush, everything. It looks like it’s part of the camera when it’s actually mounted on there. It’s got a hole right there for the mic, another hole for the LED light, and I believe it is also aluminum. Yeah, that’s aluminum. So they really fit well with the filters.
Now they’re not super strong magnets, and we’ll talk about why that’s important later. But before we do, let’s talk about ND filters on action cameras and why they’re controversial. The reason you would use an ND filter is that you want to reduce the shutter speed. If you go out in super bright sunlight with an action camera, your shutter speed is going to be somewhere up around 1/800th of a second or 1/1000th of a second. Now, ideally, your shutter speed would be at twice your frame rate. So if your frame rate on there is 24 or 30 frames a second, then your shutter speed would be 1/48th or 1/60th of a second. And that’s going to give you really natural motion blur. See how nice and blurry my hand is? Take your hand, wave it in front of your face. It’s blurry. That’s how real life looks. And the reason that you might want that on an action camera is maybe you’re working on another project, you’re using bigger cameras, and you’re filming at twice your frame rate. But there’s a shot that you want to get. Maybe it’s a POV shot, maybe it’s a shot just like in a tiny space, or it’s a shot where you need the camera to be like beaten up, like it needs to tumble through something or crash into the water, and you’ve decided that that shot could be accomplished with this little guy. Well, you want that same cinematic motion on this that you get with your larger cameras.
To quickly give you a feel of what I mean, here check out this shot of me skateboarding. So here’s his first shot. I’m looking down at the ground, and you can really see that in the shot that doesn’t have the ND filter, it doesn’t look smooth. The ground doesn’t look blurry. While the shot with the camera is down in front of my skateboard, you can really see how fast I’m going on the shot that has the ND filter, whereas on the action camera shot, it just kind of looks jittery. Or the best example is this last one where cars are driving past me. So it’s a static shot, the camera isn’t moving around much, but the cars are driving past. With the ND filter, you actually see the blur of the cars, and without the ND filter, it just looks like an action cam.
So what’s the controversy then? Well, on this guy, if you’re using the RockSteady stabilization, that’s a digital stabilization where it’s taking one frame of the image, it’s taking the next frame, it’s matching them up very quickly, and it’s stabilizing them. And that’s the same for the GoPros, that’s the same for the Insta360s. Digital stabilization is taking multiple frames, it’s lining them up, it’s trying to figure out where they go. And it can only do that if each frame is very, very crisp. So you add an ND filter, you make part of the image blurry, and it doesn’t work so well anymore. But long story short, ND filters are tools, and you need to know when to use them and when not to use them. If you are relying on the stabilization of this camera, maybe you don’t want ND filters on there. But then there’s other situations where the camera’s not going to be moving very much, you’re just going to be filming something, and you want it to look as cinematic as possible.
I will say that this entire filter set is extremely well made. I really like this Bright Daylight pack one in particular because it gives you the circular pull. Look at this circular… hang on. See, the filter is on there already, and then there’s this ring, and you just kind of spin the ring, and you get that polarizing effect where the sky’s blues change a lot, or you can kind of see through glass, it has like a reflection across it. So these are really good. I really do like them. I will give them a solid recommendation. But there is one filter from Freewell, and I would say that anyone that has this camera has to go buy this $20 filter from Freewell. And their filter looks more like one of these guys, which is just an ND filter out of there. I don’t like the cases, by the way. That’s my only con for this whole set. The cases… not a big…
