Advantages of the Canon R3 over the Sony A1
As a user of both the Sony A1 and Canon R5, I must admit that these cameras are overkill for most people, including myself. However, Canon is not holding back with the R3. Having had access to some information prior to its launch, I was astonished by its features. Here are some advantages of the R3 over my Sony A1:
- The R3 can shoot up to 6k 60p 12-bit uncropped raw video internally to a CF Express card, surpassing the capabilities of the A1.
- In addition, the R3 offers 4k 120 10-bit output, a feature shared with my Canon R5 and Sony A1, both of which can record 8k internally.
- What’s truly remarkable is that Canon claims the R3 can shoot 6k 60p raw for 25 minutes in an ambient temperature of about 73 degrees, even with the auto power off temperature setting enabled. When turned off, it can shoot for over 60 minutes. This suggests that the R3 may be more usable than the R5 on hot days.
- The R3 also boasts the weather ceiling of a 1D camera, surpassing Sony in this aspect.
- When it comes to speed, the R3 matches the Sony A1’s 30 frames per second using the electronic shutter, but surpasses it with 12 frames per second using the mechanical shutter.
- One interesting feature of the R3 is the ability to control autofocus with your eyeball. While this may not excite everyone, as it’s already relatively easy to achieve focus when shooting portraits, it could be a game-changer if it works well.
- The R3 offers 1053 autofocus points, compared to the A1’s 700 points.
- Both the R3 and A1 excel in autofocus and subject tracking, with Canon introducing a new vehicle AF mode with the R3.
- The R3 has a maximum shutter speed of 164,000, while the A1 reaches a max shutter speed of 132,000. Both cameras offer completely silent shooting and a blackout-free EVF.
- The A1 still holds the title for the best EVF in the game, with a 9.4 million-dot EVF at a 240 refresh rate, while the R3’s EVF features 5.7 million dots at 120.
- Canon has introduced a 24-megapixel stacked backside-illuminated sensor in the R3, which is a first for Canon. While I personally prefer the 50-megapixel sensor of the A1 and the 45-megapixel sensor of the R5, I can’t help but fantasize about the reduced file size of 24-megapixel photos after a portrait shoot.
- Low-light performance is a crucial factor, and it remains to be seen how well the R3 will perform in this aspect. It does offer a higher native ISO range of 100 to 102,000, compared to the A1’s native range of 100 to 32,000.
- The R3 is priced at $6,000, while the A1 is priced at $6,500, making Canon’s pricing strategy strategic and competitive.
Although the A1 has advantages such as its impressive 50-megapixel sensor, the expansive Sony E-mount lens ecosystem, and certain design aspects like the smaller form factor and non-swivel screen, these may only provide temporary advantages. Canon has truly gone all out with the R3, creating a camera that resembles a mirrorless 1DX. It even surpasses many mirrorless cameras by offering 6k up to 60p raw internal recording, making it harder to justify buying a dedicated cinema camera like the C70. Jared Paulin recently uploaded an hour-long first impression sniff test of the R3, while the rest of us mere mortals can only drool over the impressive spec sheet.
