Phil Sharp on Developing Visual Style

The head Shot photography industry in particular look very syy and quite formulaic but I was always impressed with this photographer about how much he Had such a developed Visual Voice he really knew what he wanted his images to look like and because of that they look quite different from the other stuff that was out there but more than that I was always impressed with how much character his images had and how much of His subject he managed to draw out and put their personality into the shot and I always wondered to myself what kind of alchy is happening in that room between him and that subject so that he’s making these evocative images so consistent instantly.

Phil Sharp on Lighting and Naturalistic Look

I like using natural light as a mate of mine once said I think when I was setting up a Shot I had an assistant and I you know the light was kind of was in and out and I it was looking good but I was setting up a flash at the time and uh I was like I might just use natural light and he’s Like yeah let’s do it the sun’s had four billion years of practice like let’s use the natural light um.

Phil Sharp on Capturing Moments

I do have moments when I sense that I’ve taken a good photograph and I would say the the main factor is when you sense that the when my sitter is Truly kind of accessing something um like I don’t necessarily know what they’re they’re feeling but you know you you’ve kind of gone on a journey with them and so it’s not vulnerability and a sort of negative sense it’s in a kind of uh in the sense Where they yeah just sort of yielded to the process and they are just um found a sort of sort of TR true kind of neutrality in some way I mean it’s kind of hard to describe I suppose exactly what it is.

Final Thoughts

Phil Sharp’s approach to creating portraits and headshots with character is truly inspiring.
