Cinematic Low Budget Commercials – MasterClass

Cinematic low budget commercials are a great way for businesses to promote their products or services without breaking the bank. In this masterclass, we will discuss tips and techniques for creating high-quality commercials with a small crew and minimal gear.

Choosing the Right Gear

When shooting a low budget commercial, it’s important to choose the right gear to get the best results. For our recent shoot for a company called Fuel in Toronto, we used a small nimble crew and minimal gear to achieve cinematic results.

We used the Sony FX6 as our camera, paired with a variety of lenses including the Helios 44-2, Sigma Art 35, and 24. To achieve the soft focus flares in the background, we used the Polar Pro matte box system with their mist filter. For monitoring, the SmallHD Cine 7 with a Teradek module allowed us to see exactly what was being captured.

For lighting, the Aputure 300D II provided excellent illumination, and a hazer by MarQ added an atmospheric effect to the footage. Sound was captured using the Sennheiser 416 microphone, which proved to be an excellent choice for a nimble crew.

Communication and Trust Building

One of the key elements of a successful low budget commercial shoot is building trust with the client. This begins with effective communication and pre-production planning. By understanding the client’s needs and vision for the commercial, you can align the production process to meet their expectations.

It’s essential to ask the client about the problem they are trying to solve and the specific needs for the shoot. For the Fuel commercial, the goal was to identify their target customers and create a relatable commercial for social media platforms like Instagram.

By getting the client on board with your creative ideas and addressing potential issues ahead of time, you can build trust and set the stage for a smooth and productive shoot.

Post-Production and Additional Tips

After the shoot, the footage was enhanced with a custom Cine LUT V2 for color grading. This added a cinematic look and feel to the commercial, delivering a high-quality end product.

Additionally, it’s important to be adaptable and resourceful on a low budget commercial shoot. Using versatile equipment such as the Omni Charge for powering various devices and the Sennheiser 416 microphone for capturing quality sound without a dedicated sound technician, can make a significant difference in the final result.

In conclusion, mastering the art of creating cinematic low budget commercials requires effective communication, trust building, and resourceful use of gear and techniques. By following these tips, you can produce high-quality commercials that make a lasting impact.
