Introduction

Hi, I’m Dustin Abbott and I’m here today to give you my video review of the Canon RF 28 mm f2.8 STM. This is Canon’s first RF Mount pancake lens and I have to say it is a winner. It’s less than an inch long but with very good optics and a price point of about 300 US dollars, which ties for the cheapest full-frame RF lens in existence at the moment.

Build and Design

The overall build and design of the Canon RF 28 mm f2.8 STM is very unique due to its incredibly compact size. It is 24.7 mm long and 69 mm in diameter, weighing in at just 120 g. The build quality is fairly good, and the lens feels substantial despite being made of engineered plastics. However, no lens hood is included, and you would need to purchase the Canon’s EW 55C lens hood for an additional $45.

AutoFocus and Manual Focus

The lens features an STM or stepping focus motor, which provides reasonably quiet autofocus. The manual focus process is vastly improved compared to other lenses, with a better-executed process and a focus guide that works really well. The lens also has a 55 mm front filter thread and a seven-blade iris for circular aperture. The minimum focus distance is 23 cm, allowing for useful close-up shots.

Performance

The performance of the Canon RF 28 mm f2.8 STM is impressive, with good optical quality and versatility despite its small size and affordable price. The lens is able to capture high-quality images and handle various shooting scenarios, making it a great choice for a wide range of photographers. Overall, it offers big fun in a tiny package and is definitely worth considering.

So, if you’re looking for a compact and affordable lens that doesn’t compromise on quality, the Canon RF 28 mm f2.8 STM is definitely a great option to consider.
