Introduction
Hey everyone, it’s Chia here and today I’ll be trying out the Canon RF 28-70 F2.0 lens on my EOS R. I’ve been using the adapter and my EF prime collection up until now, so this is a special lens for me. Thanks to Digi Direct in Brisbane for loaning me this lens for the shoot. We’ll be doing a portrait shoot with my friend Mel, with Carlo capturing the behind-the-scenes shots.
First Impressions
As I stood in the middle of the shoot, I noticed how nice the lens looked. The ability to zoom in and out while keeping the f2.0 aperture is fantastic. The lens is able to capture flares beautifully, adding a unique touch to the photos.
Image Quality
I only had this lens for 24 hours, but I was able to test it in a fashion portrait environment. Shooting at f2.0, I wanted to see how it performed at its maximum aperture. The image quality and sharpness of this lens rival that of prime lenses. From 28mm to 70mm, it remained tack sharp, impressing me greatly.
Focus Speed and Accuracy
The focus speed and accuracy of this lens were exceptional. I used the face and eye detection feature on the EOS R, which worked flawlessly for the majority of shots. Only a small percentage of photos had slight focus issues. Considering I took around 800 photos, this is a negligible amount. The snappiness of the lens, despite its size, is truly astounding.
Size and Weight
The size and weight of the lens may be a concern for some, as it is a heavy lens. However, given its focal range of 28mm to 70mm and wide maximum aperture of f2.8, its size and weight are understandable. It may make your setup heavier overall, especially when using a stabilizer or gimbal. Keep in mind that you may need a gimbal with a larger payload to accommodate the weight of this lens.
Video Performance
While the lens does not have built-in stabilization, the footage captured on the EOS R at 1080p/50fps was incredibly sharp. For serious video work, it is recommended to use a stabilizer, tripod, or monopod. The weight of the lens may make your setup heavier, potentially requiring a gimbal with a higher payload capacity.
Zoom Ring
The zoom ring on this lens can be a bit difficult to turn. This is likely intentional to prevent the lens from automatically zooming out when the camera is flipped or attached to a strap. It can be slightly uncomfortable to use, requiring two fingers to turn the ring instead of just one. However, over time, one could get used to it.

Some photographers who only shoot with a 35mm prime and an 85mm prime might find the 28-70mm range a suitable replacement for their setup. While it may not reach the exact 85mm focal length, the f2.0 aperture compensates for it, allowing for beautiful out-of-focus backgrounds. For those seeking the versatility of a 24-70mm lens and envying the blurry backgrounds of prime lenses, the Canon RF 28-70mm F2 could be the ultimate compromise.
