Canon RF 24-70mm 2.8 – Photoshoot + Sample Images

Introduction

Hey guys, it’s Mitch here. Today, I’m doing a shoot with Amanda and using my Canon R6 camera with the RF 24-70mm 2.8 lens. I’m really excited to try out this zoom lens since I usually shoot with prime lenses. Being an RF lens, I’m particularly interested in its performance. I’ll also provide a selection of raw files for you to download in the description below, so make sure to check them out. Let’s get into it!

Shooting Experience

The 24-70mm zoom range was great to have for this shoot, although I’m more accustomed to shooting with wide-angle prime lenses like the 24mm and 35mm. I found myself gravitating towards using those focal lengths with this lens as well.

During the shoot, I used the servo autofocus with face and eye tracking, and it did a fantastic job. I didn’t have to worry about missing any shots. Compared to using a prime lens, I noticed that I moved around less as I could simply zoom in and out to achieve the desired framing.

Image Quality

I loved how versatile this lens is, but I did notice that at its maximum aperture of 2.8, the subject-background separation wasn’t as clear as when using a 1.4 aperture prime lens. However, it still produced really sharp images, comparable to Canon’s recent L series prime lenses, even when shooting wide open at 2.8.

There was a noticeable amount of vignetting throughout the zoom range, but it was easily corrected in post-processing using Lightroom’s profile correction feature.

Autofocus Performance

The Canon R6’s brand new Dual Pixel Autofocus 2, combined with the 24-70mm lens, delivered extremely accurate and lightning-fast autofocus. This combination is a dream setup for photographers looking for focus speed and accuracy. I didn’t miss a single shot as long as I was within the range of the face tracking system.

Capturing Unique Shots

We tried experimenting with different poses and angles during the shoot. One shot I particularly liked was having Amanda lean against a reflective wall, capturing her reflection along with the city in the background. It added an interesting element to the composition and made for a unique image.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed the article and the sample images. Let me know your thoughts on the images in the comments section below. A big thank you to Amanda for being an amazing model and to Paddy for filming behind the scenes. Stay tuned for more videos!
