Introduction
So I’m actually a little bit surprised to say this, but the Canon R6 has exceeded my expectations. I’ve now had a really good opportunity to get out and test the camera in multiple different situations, including portrait shoots, weddings, and some commercial video work. In this article, I will share my real-world experience with the Canon R6 after one month of use.
Favorite Photos Taken with the Canon R6
Before diving into the specifics of the camera, I want to showcase some of my favorite photos taken with the Canon R6 over the last four weeks.
The R6: Canon’s First Attempt at a Professional Mirrorless Full-Frame Camera
In my opinion, the Canon R5 and R6 are Canon’s first attempt at a professional, top-tier mirrorless full-frame camera. While the EOS R and RP were great cameras, they lacked dual card slots and didn’t have the same premium feel or customizable buttons and dials. The R5 and R6 build upon the learnings from the previous models and take it to the next level. Later in this article, I will compare the R5 and R6.
Camera Resolution
One of the hot topics surrounding the Canon R6 is its 20.1 megapixel sensor, which is the smallest number of megapixels in a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera. However, this lower resolution allows for better low-light performance. Lower megapixel sensors can fit larger pixels on the sensor, making them more sensitive in low light. Based on my tests, the R6 performs exceptionally well in low-light situations and produces clean results even at high ISOs. Additionally, the manageable file size of the 20 megapixel raw files is a plus, especially for photographers who don’t require extremely high resolution.
High-Speed Burst Mode
The R6 can shoot up to 12 frames per second with the mechanical and electronic first curtain shutter and up to 20 frames per second with the fully electronic shutter. While I personally don’t have much use for 20 frames per second, the 12 frames per second option is perfect for capturing decisive moments. It’s important to note that the full performance of the high-speed burst mode may only be achieved with RF lenses, and the battery type can also affect the frame rate.
Dynamic Range and Exposing
The R6 boasts fantastic shadow recovery and average highlight recovery. In my tests, I found that exposing the camera correctly or slightly overexposing by one stop provides the best dynamic range performance. Canon has made significant improvements in shadow recovery, making it a strong suit for the R6. However, underexposing beyond two stops may introduce noticeable fixed pattern noise and color noise.
Dual Pixel Autofocus 2
The standout feature of the R6 is its Dual Pixel Autofocus 2, which offers unparalleled focus accuracy. Whether using RF lenses or even third-party lenses like the Tamron 35mm 1.4 SP, the R6’s autofocus system performs flawlessly. Tracking subjects, especially with the eye tracking feature, is incredibly precise and reliable. However, it’s worth noting that object tracking in low light during video mode may not be as effective.
