Canon Fails to Perform in Japan

Yabashi’s Top 10 Sales Figures

For the first half of February, we have some stunning sales outcomes when we look at Yashi’s top 10. Did Canon get shut out of the top 10 for the very first time? Did the Sony A9 Mark II break all sales figures? And what about the little guy? Did Hasselblad, Panasonic, or OM systems make it into the top 10?

Why Yabashi Matters

Yodobashi publishes their top 10 sales figures every two weeks like clockwork. Yodobashi is the fourth largest Japanese camera store and provides a glimpse into how well Canon is doing in a larger Japanese camera store. Even though Canon holds 48% market share globally, Yodobashi’s data gives us something to talk about on a slow Sunday morning.

Top 10 Rankings

In first and second place, we have the Sony A7C and the Sony A7C kit. Sony has been dominating Yabashi’s top 10 for the last nine months. Interestingly, in third place, we see the Nikon ZF, a retro-style camera. Nikon also secures fifth place with the Nikon Z8.

Fuji and Canon Absence

A surprise entry in seventh place is the Fujifilm XT5, a solid APS-C camera. However, the biggest shock is the absence of Canon cameras in the top 10. Despite significant discounts on cameras like the Canon EOS R5 and R5C, they fail to make an impact in the Japanese market due to currency exchange rates.

Yabashi Top 10 in Detail

Looking at the rankings, Sony dominates with four cameras in the top 10. Nikon follows closely with three models. What’s surprising is the absence of the Sony A9 Mark II, despite global attention on its features. Even more shocking is the appearance of Hasselblad’s 907X and CF 100C in tenth place, a first for the brand in Yabashi’s top 10.

In conclusion, the absence of Canon from Yabashi’s top 10 rankings highlights the challenges the brand faces in the Japanese market. While Sony and Nikon continue to perform well, unexpected entries like Hasselblad signal a changing landscape in camera sales. The impact of currency exchange rates further complicates the market dynamics, affecting sales of discounted Canon cameras.
