March 2023 was the last time we received any firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5. Firmware 1.8.1 brought Canon’s first implementation of pixel shift, while 1.8.0 was likely only used internally. Shortly after that firmware update, rumors of a big firmware update for the camera started circulating, with expectations of its release before the end of the year. However, recent updates suggest that the upcoming firmware update might not be as significant as initially anticipated.

Soon after receiving a comment from a viewer claiming to have firmware 1.8.2 on their loaner Canon EOS R5, further investigation was conducted.
