It’s been a very busy week, it’s Wednesday and we already have a series of camera announcements. Sony announced the Burano 8K digital cinema camera for twenty-five thousand dollars. Panasonic announced the micro four thirds g92. Fujifilm announced the gfx 102. And Canon announced a series of prime Cinema Lenses. All these announcements occurred on Tuesday with much of the week left to go. This is shaping up to be a very busy camera season.
The Canon Cinema Primes
What’s remarkable about the Canon announcement of seven Cinema lenses isn’t just the optics or the prime focal length. You see, those seven lenses have been rumored for well over a year now. It’s about the timing. The IBC conference is coming up in just a couple of days. Releasing a series of prime lenses three days before the IBC conference signals that Canon is getting ready to announce Cinema cameras. Cinema cameras that have been rumored since 2020.
The specifications for these lenses suggest that Canon is preparing to release an 8K cinema camera. The lenses are designed to deliver high resolution 8K video and are compatible with full-frame sensors. They feature dual pixel focus guide metadata capture and distortion correction. The lens lineup includes the CNR 24mm T1.5 LF, CNR 14mm T3.1 LF, and more. All the lenses are priced between $3,950 and $4,220 are available for pre-order today.
What to Expect at IBC
The IBC conference, which stands for International Broadcasters Convention, is held by and attended by broadcast professionals in the industry. Prime lenses for Canon’s Cinema line are of great interest to this audience. Releasing the Cinema primes right before the IBC conference suggests that Canon is gearing up to make a big announcement.
