Canon 35mm F1.4L II Review + Comparison
Introduction
Hey everyone, today is the day that my Canon 35mm F1.4L Mark I lens is going to be retired because I am getting the Mark II version, which I’m really excited about. This lens has served me well and will now become a backup lens. In this article, I will be doing a review on the new Mark II lens and also comparing it with the old lens.
First Impressions
I just got the Canon 35mm F1.4L Mark II lens and I wanted to share my first impressions with you. The Mark II lens looks bigger and taller compared to the Mark I lens. It also feels a bit heavier. The build quality of the Mark I lens seems better, but only time will tell if the Mark II lens will last as long. One improvement I noticed is that the order to manual focus switch is more secure on the Mark II lens, unlike the Mark I lens which had the switch fall off due to years of use.
Improvements in the Mark II Lens
The Mark II lens is supposed to be faster and have more accurate autofocus. The images are also said to be sharper from corner to corner, with improved chromatic aberration compared to the Mark I lens. These improvements can only be truly tested in real-world scenarios, so I have a photoshoot planned where I will be testing the Mark II lens for the first time.
Photoshoot and Comparison
During the photoshoot, I took some portraits with the Mark II lens and also compared it with the Mark I lens. From the photos, I can already see that the Mark II lens produces sharper images from corner to corner. The bucket in the background is also sharper on the Mark II lens compared to the Mark I lens. The Mark II lens also shows less distortion and chromatic aberration compared to the Mark I lens, especially when shooting backlit objects.
Is the Upgrade Worth It?
The Mark I lens was already a great lens, and the Mark II lens has improved upon some aspects. However, the price difference between the two lenses is significant. If money is not a big concern, I would recommend going for the Mark II lens. But if you already have the Mark I lens and it is still functioning well, the upgrade may not be necessary unless you want the improved sharpness and reduced distortion and chromatic aberration.
To conclude, the Canon 35mm F1.4L Mark II lens performs excellently with its corner-to-corner sharpness and improved chromatic aberration. However, whether the upgrade is worth it will depend on individual preferences and budget constraints.
