Guys, quick public service announcement: if you’ve wanted a Sony mirrorless full-frame body with at least 40 megapixels worth of resolution but the a7r ii doesn’t do it for you, I understand. And if you can’t stretch to the a7r4, I also understand. The recently released A7r 3a is now on sale for just under 2 grand, $1,998 to be precise. Buy it, buy it now while you can while supplies last or this price reduction holds. Don’t even wait for the end of this video, just buy it. Here’s why.
The Original a7R III
When the original a7R III was launched to great fanfare in October 2017, it was a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the a7R II. While it sported what was essentially, or exactly (I’m not quite sure which), the same 42.4 megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor and Bionz X processor, the a7R III added pixel shift and upgraded EVF, which was a big deal. It also had upgraded autofocus, an updated rear panel with touch interface, a few more dots worth of resolution, dual card slots (even a bigger deal for most), the new high-capacity Z battery which was maybe the biggest deal of all to everyone, and a USB-C port. It was priced for $3,200.
The a7R IIIa
When Sony launched the a7R IIIa in April of this year to no fanfare, it was basically an a7R III with minor updates to the USB-C port and rear panel. The handwriting was on the wall – this was an interim holding action. By August, it was selling for $2,800, and right now, three months later, it’s selling for $800 less than that.
But here’s the thing: continuing chip shortages have led Sony to recently suspend production of the a72 and a6400 altogether, which suggests that the a7R3a may not be far behind. The original a7R III has already been discontinued. The 9-megapixels shy, $500 more expensive non-r a74 isn’t due for another month or so, and the 24-megapixel a7 III, introduced just a few months after the original a7R III, is on sale for only $200 less than the a7R IIIa is now.
I’d call the a7R IIIa an arbitrage opportunity if it gives you what you want and your timing and price sensitivity are such that another month wait and $500 are significant. If not, however, I understand that too. I think the a74 will be worth the wait, the price, and the reduction in resolution. For many of us, it’s on my shopping list, sale price or not.
