Bringing back COLOUR to a DULL photo – Easy Beginner Lightroom Tutorial

Hey guys, I am back with another Lightroom tutorial and today I’m going to be showing you my editing process in bringing back color to a dull photo. In this tutorial, I will guide you step by step on how to enhance an image that may appear dull or lack vibrant colors. Let’s dive right into the editing process!

Adjusting the Temperature and Tint

The first thing I noticed in this photo is the blue cast caused by the cloudy weather. To counter this, I will adjust the temperature by dragging it up until I’m satisfied with the result. Additionally, I noticed a slight green cast, which I will correct by increasing the tint. This will help bring back the true colors of the image.

Correcting Exposure and Shadows

Next, I noticed that the image is slightly underexposed. To fix this, I will adjust the exposure. Instead of using my mouse to drag it up, I prefer using the up arrow key for more precise adjustments. I find Lightroom to be sensitive when using the mouse, so this technique helps me achieve a subtle and natural edit.

I also want to bring out more detail in the background and the model’s face. To achieve this, I will increase the shadows. Additionally, I will slightly decrease the highlights to reduce the brightness in specific areas such as the model’s shoulder and the water. This adjustment adds more contrast to the image.

Adding a Film-Like Effect with Tone Curve

To add a film-like effect to the image, I will use the Tone Curve feature. By adjusting the blacks and highlights, I can achieve the desired look. I will increase the blacks and crush the highlights, creating an S-shaped curve. This editing style aligns with my personal preferences and adds a unique touch to the image.

Fine-Tuning Colors with Split Toning

Next, it’s time to enhance the colors and give the photo some personality. The Split Toning feature allows me to adjust the color tones in the shadows and highlights. I start with the shadows and increase the saturation to clearly see the effect. Then, I experiment with different hues to see how they affect the photo. For this image, I decide to focus on the oranges and leave it at a comfortable saturation level.

I also like to play with the highlights by increasing the saturation and adjusting the hue. This can lead to creative edits, such as having the highlights in a light blue shade. However, for this photo, I decide to bring it back to a subtle saturation level and stick with a warm hue. Experimenting with these adjustments helps me find the right balance and adds visual interest to the image.

Final Touches and Comparison

As a final touch, I adjust the exposure and tint once again to ensure consistency and to achieve the desired color tone. For personal work, I prefer a cooler and more greenish tone, while for clients or editorials, I opt for warmer and pinkish tones.

Now let’s take a moment to compare the before and after. It’s fascinating to see how these simple adjustments can transform a dull photo into a vibrant and eye-catching image. The before image almost appears black-and-white in comparison to the colorful and lively after image. The difference that these tweaks make is truly remarkable!

In conclusion, editing a photo to bring out its true colors and make it stand out requires gradual adjustments and a keen eye for detail. By using the tools and techniques offered in Lightroom, you can enhance a dull photo and take it to the next level. Remember to experiment, find your editing style, and have fun with the process. Happy editing!
