Disappointing News on the Timeline
In this morning’s story from Canon rumors, CanonRummer says that there were a bunch of reports in regards to new firmware updates coming in Q3 for the Canon EOS R5 that would add a slurry of features. Sadly, that timeline doesn’t look like it’s going to come to fruition. According to Canon rumors, the big firmware update that we’re supposed to get before the end of 2023 isn’t going to happen. We’re not going to get a big firmware update. And if you’ll recall, back in March and April, that big firmware update was supposed to include many things, including pre-buffer shooting, focus breathing compensation, many improvements to the autofocus system, autofocus tracking, subject detection from vehicles to well, more animals, so you can lock onto their pretty little faces and snap your shots away. And of course, for video shooters, there was that well elimination or removal of that 30-minute record limit.
Speculations and Possible Alternatives
I can just hear the thoughts right now. One gentleman was just telling me the other day that he doesn’t believe it. He thinks that all these rumored specifications for a big firmware update are more plausible, that they’re actually capabilities that we’re going to find in the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, the successor to the Canon EOS R5, a camera that’s due to be announced and released sometime in early 2024, at around the three and a half to four-year mark. Yeah, a little bit of a letdown, a little bit of a kick in the teeth, it’s a little bit frustrating. I get that, but we are supposed to be getting a firmware update before the end of 2023 in Q3, which is on our doorstep, or Q4, well, we don’t know at this point, just that it’s going to be sometime in 2023, and Canon rumors backs this up. We’ve been told that any further firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5 Mark 1 will come out later in 2023, but it won’t be any major feature update. There are still a few things that Canon will add in terms of capabilities and enhancements, but you need to temper your expectations.
The Future of Canon Firmware Updates
How many times have we been told since we got that well rumor of a big firmware update coming for the Canon EOS R5 here in 2023? Many of you have said, you know what, I don’t believe it, I don’t think it’s going to come. This is frustrating, I’m tired. And if you recall when we got firmware 1.8.1, skipping 1.8.0 where we got pixel shift, the feedback from that was talking to Canon, to even me, the amount of people that were upset over this feature update when there was no documentation saying that they were going to do it, that they were going to deliver these capabilities. And the feedback was absolutely incredible. And so, maybe that’s why we’re being told to temper our expectations, temporary expectations and what we see in a future firmware update.
What could we get in terms of capabilities? Could we get that 30-minute record limit lifted? And I’ve said this many times myself, that I don’t believe that that 30-minute record limit is going to be lifted in a firmware update. I would love to see it, but I just, I how many times have I told you, I just don’t get that feeling. Canon has removed that arbitrary 30-minute record limit in cameras such as the Canon EOS R3 and the successors to the R6, the R6 Mark II, and many other cameras, but by releasing a new camera, not providing a firmware update. In fact, Canon hasn’t released a single firmware update for any of their mirrorless cameras that does address that 30-minute record limit. But other capabilities, such as pre-buffer shooting, I could see that in the R5 Mark II, and breathing compensation again, I could see that in the R5 Mark II. But updates and improvements to the autofocus system, well, I think that makes an awful lot of sense when you consider the competition.
Canon has a lot to work on, and I just can’t imagine that a high priority will be given to a big firmware update as we move into releasing new cameras, which is going to provide them with a lot more income. Whereas a big firmware update for the R5, not so much. So, the R5 Mark II, the R1, a whole bunch of lenses, eight to ten of them, yep, I think it’s safe to say that at this point, a big firmware update for the Canon EOS R5, we can call that rumor busted.
