All right, I just got back from Iceland. I was there for two days, maybe less. It’s all a blur. The midnight sun kept everything from getting fully dark, creating a cool and trippy atmosphere. I brought my film camera, thinking I would run several rolls of film through it. However, I only ended up shooting half a roll. In this article, we will explore my experience with shooting film and the excitement and anticipation that comes with it.
Processing the Film
For the sake of this article, I wanted to get the film processed as soon as possible. I found a lab in Toronto that processed it for me in one hour. They sent back the scans, and I am currently downloading them. The lack of instant gratification adds to the excitement of this whole process, and I am falling in love with it.
Examining the Photos
Now, let’s go through and see if any of the 15 frames are any good and how I would edit them in Lightroom. I shot the photos using CineStill 400D film and intentionally overexposed them. The film retains more detail in the highlights, even when overexposed. As I look at the photos, some stand out more than others. There are shots of landscapes, rocks, and even my friend Ben making coffee.
Editing in Lightroom
When working with film photos, there is minimal editing required as the film comes back from the lab with the desired colors and look. However, I may need to make slight adjustments to the exposure, highlights, and contrast. The editing process for film is different from shooting digital. The final result almost feels like going from log to color. I also struggle with conforming to the 4×5 aspect ratio, as I prefer a landscape format for my photos.
