Criteria for the best camera
I had a few criteria that I wanted to maintain for which cameras we were looking at here. First of all, I wanted to be able to capture full width 8K video, so no need to worry about a crop unlike the Sony A7R5. Also, I was looking for compact hybrid bodies, cameras that are great for both photography and capturing video. Lastly, these are cameras that I have a lot of experience with, having shot projects on them and recorded full reviews for each one.
Handling
In third place for handling is the Sony A1. While it may look enormous, my major issue with this camera is that it has a lot of controls that are dedicated for photography but won’t work for video tracking. The body is also a bit too small for my hands, especially when adding accessories like monitors and mics.
In second place is the Nikon Z8, which feels fantastic in my hands and has a great interface with physical controls. However, it lacks a fully articulating screen, which may be a downside for some users.
First place goes to the Canon r5c, which has buttons that can be customized for both photo and video modes. It is very intuitive to use, with a great grip and balance. The only drawback is its micro HDMI port, which is not of the best quality.
Displays
In last place for displays is the Nikon Z8, which lacks a fully articulating display and has a lower resolution. While it has some cool features for photographers, it doesn’t provide the level of detail needed for shooting video.
In second place is the Sony A1, which has a tilt display and the lowest resolution. However, it has an incredibly detailed electronic viewfinder that stays sharp even when shooting 8K video.
First place goes to the Canon r5c, which has a fully articulating and detailed LCD panel, along with a high-resolution electronic viewfinder. It offers the best combination of usability and detail for shooting 8K video.
Battery Life
In last place for battery life when recording 8K 10-bit internally is the Canon r5c, which lasts just over half an hour.
In second place is the Nikon Z8, which records just over a full hour, twice as long as the Canon r5c.
First place goes to the Sony A1, which records an hour and 45 minutes thanks to its powerful battery.
Experience with 8K Video
Let’s stop the camera competition for a few moments to discuss the massive amount of computing power required to work with 8K video. In my office where I record the petapixel podcast, I talk about my experience with 8K video and the challenges it presents.
