Creating a Giant White Slit of Light
For the first photo, the photographer wanted to create a giant white slit of light on the wall. To achieve this, a strobe was used, specifically the Godox 8400 connected to the Godox Sa17 projector. A wide angle lens accessory and a slit gobo were also utilized. The photographer had to position the light on the other side of the studio to compensate for the small size of the slit. Light placement is crucial in achieving the desired effect.
Adding Dynamic Elements
To make the photo more dynamic, two LEDs were placed on each side of the subject. The photographer added blue to the shadows on the wall to complement the white light. By keeping the entire background in blue, the image retains a cohesive look without blending together.
Softening Lines and Creating Separation
To shoot a portrait with the window gobo, the photographer wanted to soften the lines and make them slightly blurry. The subject’s ponytail was well-suited for this shot as it created separation between the ponytail and her body, adding depth to the image. The placement of the light also cast a nice shadow on the background.
Showcasing Tattoos with Color Shadows
For the final look, the goal was to highlight the subject’s tattoos. Three LEDs were placed close to each other to create different color shadows. By positioning the lights near the subject’s face, the shadows were cast onto the backdrop, creating a striking effect.
A Hack for Easier Light Projection
The photographer discovered a hack that would have made the process easier. By using light shaping tools that resemble straight-edged pieces, the size of the slit of light can be customized, allowing for closer placement of the light source. This eliminates the need to stand far away and simplifies the setup.
Optimizing Light Placement
By placing the light closer to the subject, the photographer achieves a more efficient setup. Shooting at eye level or slightly above eye level provides good lighting, while shooting from different angles allows for variations in perspective. Light placement is key in creating the desired shadows and overall image aesthetic.
