5 Lighting Essentials in 5 Minutes: Tips and Techniques

Hello my friends, you guys gave me some great feedback about my last video – five cinematic tips in five minutes. So, we’re doing it again but this time talking about lighting, as some of you were asking. Let’s get into it.

And again, these are just tips, not rules. They’re just guidelines, principles that I use. If you don’t like them, you probably have something better to use. But let’s get into tip number one.

Tip 1: Control Your Lighting

Your first tip is to control your lighting. You don’t want light spraying everywhere, over sets, crew, and the background. Use grids, flags, or bring the lighting closer to control the spread of light. This creates pockets of light and shadows, making the scene more dynamic.

Tip 2: Utilize Available Light

Available light is the best light. Learn to control natural light sources such as the sun using apps like Sun Seeker and Shadow Map. Understanding the sun’s position and the resulting shadows can help create dramatic looks.

Tip 3: Bigger Lights for Softer Effect

Bigger lights are softer. Larger light sources, when closer, produce softer lighting. This complements the characters and creates a more pleasing look. Experiment with different light sizes to achieve the desired effect.

Tip 4: Understand Lighting’s Visual Language

Lighting is a visual language. Where you place the lights conveys a message to your audience subconsciously. Different lighting styles, from straight-on to side or backlighting, communicate varying emotions and importance. Understand what your lighting is saying in your visual storytelling.

Tip 5: Experiment with Color Temperatures

Don’t be afraid to change up color temperatures. Experiment with different hues to separate your subject from the background. Using varying color temperatures can add depth and visual interest to your shots.

So, there you have it – five lighting techniques in five minutes. Remember, these are just guidelines, and experimentation is key to finding your unique visual style. Keep learning and exploring the world of lighting in your filmmaking journey!
