To achieve these transitions, we are using the DJI Ronin-S gimbal along with some accessories. Our setup includes a focus motor, which allows us to control the focus, iris, or zoom of our lens using the Ronin-S hand wheel. We also have a cheese plate for additional mounting options.
Additionally, we have attached a command unit for quick access to Ronin settings like access speeds, stiffness, and setting up time lapses. For today’s shoot, we are using the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera with a 16-35mm lens, shooting at 60 frames per second for flexibility in post-production.
However, even if you don’t have these specific accessories, don’t worry! You can still achieve these transitions with basic equipment.
Transition #1: Wall Orbit
For the first transition, start by positioning your camera against a wall and orbit around your subject, keeping them centered in the frame. Finish the shot with the camera up against the opposite wall. It’s important to maintain the same distance from your subject throughout the entire move.
Transition #2: Same Distance Orbit
Go to your second location and perform a similar move while maintaining the same distance from your subject as in the first shot. You can either continue orbiting to the opposite side or stop in the middle.
Transition #3: Instant Film Zoom
In this transition, have your subject hold an instant film photo and zoom into it to transition to the next shot. Walk steadily towards the subject while making sure the instant film covers the entire lens for a smooth transition. Using a lens motor makes it easier to control the zoom, but it can also be done manually by walking back while zooming in.
Transition #4: Zoom & Walk
At your second location, perform another zoom while walking back. This will create a similar movement in both shots, enhancing the overall effect. If you don’t have a lens motor, shooting in 4K and scaling the footage can help achieve a similar result.
Transition #5: 360 Roll
To achieve a 360 roll transition, use the Ronin-S in flashlight mode and perform a roll by using the joystick. At the second location, do another 360 roll while moving forward in the same direction as the first shot. Finish the roll with a pan to the right to transition to the next shot.
Now, let’s take a look at how to put it all together in post-production using software like After Effects.
Speed Ramps and Motion Blur
For speed ramps, use time remap in After Effects, Premiere, or Final Cut to set keyframes and adjust the timing of your footage. To enhance the effect, add motion blur using tools like radial blur or directional blur, masking the subject to prevent blurring.
Compositing and Track Mattes
To composite your shots, you can use the 3D camera tracker in After Effects. Track the camera movement, create a solid layer, and mask the area where you want the next shot to be. Align the solid layer with the tracked points and paste the position values onto the next clip. Adjust the scale and position to fit within the solid layer.
To refine the composition, adjust the position and scale of your footage, add motion blur, and make any final tweaks necessary. Creating adjustment layers and using effects like CC repet I’ll or radial blur can help enhance the transitions.
