3 Tricks Every Photographer Needs to Know

Risking $10,000 in Gear

Why am I upside down? Well, let me explain. In this video, I want to share how I needed to get creative in order to get unique shots of big tusker elephants in Elli Park in Kenya. This experience taught me valuable tricks every photographer should know.

Chasing the Perfect Shot

During a two-week safari in Kenya, the biggest challenge was capturing one of the rare big tusker elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Due to safari regulations, we couldn’t leave the Land Cruiser, and the height of the vehicle hindered our ability to capture the unique angle we desired.

Thinking Outside the Box

To overcome this challenge, I decided to attach my camera to a monopod and hang it outside the vehicle. By flipping the screen and using a remote trigger, I managed to capture lower angles, providing a more professional look to the images. It was a risky move, as I was using approximately $10,000 worth of gear, but it ultimately paid off.

Utilizing Technology for Unique Angles

I used the Canon Connect app to remotely trigger the camera while it was hanging outside the vehicle. This allowed me to achieve the low angles necessary to capture the elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. I had to rely on technology to get the shots I envisioned in my mind.

Remaining Patient and Persistent

The process involved capturing 584 images over a 38-minute shoot to ensure the best results. It required patience and persistence to wait for the elephants to position themselves with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background, as well as dealing with the moving vehicle.

Overcoming Challenges

The biggest challenge was hand-holding the camera upside down with $10,000 worth of gear while trying to maintain a straight line and level. Despite the difficulties, I managed to achieve the desired results without the need for post-crop adjustments.

Conclusion

This experience taught me valuable lessons about creativity, patience, and the effective use of technology in photography. Sometimes, thinking outside the box and taking risks can lead to capturing extraordinary shots that would have otherwise been missed.
